Trading Places
I try to trade pens with the ponies and my QH mare, Nita, frequently to help with the boredom for my equine friends. So Traveler and Stormy, the ponies went into Nita's pen and Nita went into the pony pen yesterday. We have a large pile of dirt in Nita's pen that we are gradually using to fill in low spots and places where the dirt is down to hardpan, that is like cement. The ponies were fasinated by that big pile of dirt.
Nita first watched the neigbors dogs that she usually sees from farther away, and then she discovered that if she pushed on the fence enough she could just reach the big clump of purple asters that were growing outside the fence. So to save the fence hubby put her into the smaller pen that has the pony shelters in it. It was still someplace different for her to be while ponies played in her pen.
Hale Brubaker & Crow's Corner School
Maurice Hale Brubaker (known as Hale) was the youngest son of Malissa Joslin and William Brubaker. He taught at least one term at the Crow's Corner school in Smith Township, Whitley County, Indiana when he was 18 years old. This was still at a time when college degrees were not required for teaching.
Hale's life was cut short when just 6 years later he died of pneumonia while attending Law School at Columbia University in New York. His death had a traumatic affect on the family. It was a shock to his parents but particularly his father who died a little over a year later.
The brief "biography" of Hale was written by his mother: "Hale died in N Y Dec 14 1910 aged 24y 6m & 27da he was in Columbia University a Law Student would have finished in May 1911 he was born in Troy TP Whitley Co graduated in common School when 13 & in high School 17 Taught School in Smith TP. was an active member in the First Baptist church & Sunday School after all God took him called him higher where he is at rest Mother"
I'll be posting more about Hale in the future...

Ride Fast or Ride Far?
When I first started trying to increase the milage of my rides, I was advised to keep my average speed down on longer distances. "You can ride fast, or you can ride far," I was told. This advice seemed perfectly logical. The faster you ride, the sooner you'll get tired, right?
But my own experience stubbornly contradicted this piece of wisdom. I grew suspicious when, over the past two years, intentionally keeping my speed down only seemed to make me miserableon longer rides. So this summer I experimented. On some long rides I rode at whatever speed felt natural in the moment (whee!). On others I intentionally kept my speed in check. I felt better after the rides where I maintained a higher speed.
At first this discovery confused me. And then all at once, it made sense. The "fast or far" dichotomy fails to account for one crucial factor: time spent on the bike. Let's say you are doing a 100 mile ride. At an average rolling speed of 14mph, you will spend 7.14 hours on the bike. At an average rolling speed of 12mph, you will spend 8.33 hours on the bike. That's more than an hour of extra bike time! An entire extra hour of pedaling, of leaning forward, of gripping the handlebars, of chafing against the saddle. These things can wear you out just as much as the pedaling effort itself.
My point here is not that one should attempt a century ride with the zeal of a racer, but that it helps to look at a situation from multiple angles and to factor in your own strengths and weaknesses. As it turns out, I can ride faster than I've been giving myself credit. And as my body struggles to cope with longer times in the saddle, riding faster is getting me further. YMMV.

Crystal Cavern
This is another image from yesterday morning's amazing time spent photographing the Lake Superior shoreline at Hollow Rock Resort in Grand Portage, MN. There were a couple of small ice caves in the area which were very beautiful but difficult to photograph because of their location and their small size. To get this image I had to crawl down along the rocks, lay on my side on the rocks and configure my tripod so it was as low to the ground as possible, then look sideways through the viewfinder to compose the image (remember, I was laying on my side to compose this image!). The distance from the ground to the top of this little ice cave was two feet at the very most. It was probably more likely about a foot and a half tall. I was only on the edge of the cave, I didn't want to risk crawling into it in case it chose that moment to collapse. The result was worth the effort!

Early Winter Wonderland along Old Highway 61
Several November storms meant a lot of early snow accumulation inland from Lake Superior near Grand Portage, MN. This photo was taken on November 25, . I was a bit disappointed that these storms left little snow in my yard. I live right on the shores of Lake Superior and early winter storms often mean that rain falls along the shoreline instead of snow. Right now I barely have one inch of snow covering my yard, however one only needs to drive a few miles inland to see the ground covered with almost two feet of snow already!
Blue Ridge Parkway :: Reflections
The air was crisp on Sunday morning. Frost still covered the grass in the shady areas.
What it is, I don't know, but there is “something” about reflections in calm, clear water. An image within an image. Real. Yet not real. Seeing what is or isn't there.

Eternal Dancers
- My sister, Sarah, got into belly dancing about 30 years ago to loose weight. It worked and she loved the dancing. She still does it and teaches classes in gypsy dancing, belly dancing and simular styles several times a week in her home. On the day I was there her group called the Eternal Dancers were doing a performance for one of the retirement homes in Las Cruces. I went with them and took photos. Sarah is the lady in the black and orange custume. Denise is the lady with the long curly hair and Jennifer is the lady with straight hair. The seniors and employees at the home loved the show. It was the second time they had danced there and they have been asked to come again. On this day only 3 of the dancers were able to preform but there are several more in the troop. This was a free preformance but they do dance for other events for a fee.

By Kelli JoSoftball burnout victim turns pro score keeper! This over conditioned, over home-worked, under played, movie obsessed Sophomore chic thrives on icy-hot, Tide (which doesn’t get the stains out), trips to the beach, Disney World and ice baths. After her FSCJ Stars team took the Conference Championships, this jobless, couch potato sat home for the summer, then hit the books again this fall after returning to Jacksonville, FL for another softball beating. Good thing she loves it!
Kelly on the trail in Estes Park, CoPSS, Inc.By KellyLast October, Kelly started a new business called Sealwize of Northern Colorado, LLC. Within six months his company was the highest producing distributor in the nation. Due to personality conflicts and corrupt practices of the corporate company, Kelly began broadening his product lines and changed the name to Permanent Sealant Solutions, Inc. ultimately eliminating all Sealwize products. He is prepping to offer dealerships, licenses and installers in CO,UT and across the nation. He has teamed up with a marketing company that will promote his website, www.permanentsealantsolutions.com, direct mail and TV commercial presence in the marketplace nationwide. He is hoping his second year will quadruple his first.
Shyloh, left, celebrates 4A Metro League win with teammates Taryn & Kacee
A Year of SuccessBy ShylohI recently transferred to Discovery Canyon High School to finish my Junion and Senior years. Sofball was a plus in my adjusting. My Thunder team finished with a 16-5 record. We were League and Regional Champions and went to State. It was a big success for my team, our program and me. This school and the people in it have been positive in every aspect. I hope it continues that way. I also had the exciting opportunity of attending Pioneer Trek over the summer in Wyoming. We did the woman’s pull up and over Rocky Ridge! I got my driver’s license in April, and the week before that, I got my braces off. My Dad bought me my first car, a hot old ’84 convertible…it died Oct. 26. Mom and I didn’t get a timely oil change, BUT on the bright side, we got a Honda with amazing gas mileage. It’s in wonderful condition, though I have to learn the stick part of it which isn’t easy when you first start. I’ve heard more honking this week than I have in my life. So to make myself feel better I think, hey they probably just want to wish me a Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year everyone!

Travelmania By DianaI still work to clean my corner of the world. Kamee, Kelli Jo, Eva Olsen and Elaine Ustick were my top employees this year at Diana’s Personal Touch! They made it possible for me to gallivant around! We took softball trips to Kansas City and Orlando, FL where we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel while Shyloh’s club team competed at Nationals with a side trip to Cocoa Beach. For Mother’s Day I got an invitation from Emron to accompany him to the Cars 2 Wrap Party at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA. I dressed up all fancy and got the red carpet treatment and my first manicure and pedicure! August, was our exhilarating horseback trip in the CO Rockies. October was a month to remember with a trip to WA to celebrate Shannon’s marriage to Steve Jeske (four boys added to our family, Spencer, Pierce, Drew & Reece) and a trip to the hospital to welcome Lynden Lilly Godwin into our family. These two events upped the grandchild count to nine; eleven with Miguel’s twins! Thanks to the generosity of Emron and Brian, I was able to go with them to Europe. I spent a week in Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic, where Emron served his mission, and a train ride through Slovakia. Special memories are birthday gifts and letters I read on the trip, a new camera thanks to Ladell and Randy, church in the Prague Branch, Hungarian National Gallery, Karstejn Castle, cathedrals, Terezin Jewish prison, Sedlec Monastery at Kutna Hora (the bone church), Hungarian Goulash, my first subway , losing my debit card in the ATM, and Kate’s Guesthouse. I set a goal to visit my parents in Utah once a month (made it nine times) One of those special trips was in June for Seth’s marriage to Kari Sparling . It was a fabulous year of memory making! I served as teacher & compassionate service leader in Pine Creek Ward.

CyborgBy Emron
This year can be clearly split into two. The first half included snowboarding, soccer, a getaway to the Bahamas, attending the Cars 2 premiere with Mom, Seth’s beautiful June wedding, and a trip to the operating room. The second included waking up from anesthesia with a brand new knee ligament, crutches, a visit from Glade and Sherry, endless trips to the gym and physical therapy, two awesome weeks with Brian and Mom in Central Europe, including a mission visit to Czech Republic, and a wonderful Seattle wedding for Shannon. Despite the change of pace- without normal physical ability, the two constants this year were continuous work on Pixar’s “Brave” and ongoing growth in personal happiness. I can’t wait to run again, and share this film with the world.
May Peace Be Your Gift This Christmas!
